Gissou Nia

Gissou Nia (@GissouNia) is a human rights lawyer and founder & director of the Strategic Litigation Project at the Atlantic Council, which focuses on prevention and accountability efforts for human rights violations and atrocity crimes. She serves as board chair of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, which seeks to promote accountability, respect for human rights and the rule of law in Iran. In Fall 2022 she helped lead the successful campaign to remove the Islamic Republic of Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women and she is helping lead an ongoing campaign to codify the crime of gender apartheid. She started her career in The Hague, where she worked on war crimes and crimes against humanity trials at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Court.
