Dr. Stephen Tankel (LinkedIn) is a national security expert with 20 years of experience working across government, academia, and non-governmental organizations. He is an Associate Professor at American University, where his research interests include defense industrial strategy, security cooperation and assistance, arms sales, irregular warfare, counterterrorism, and information operations. Stephen is the author of two books and has been published in a wide array of peer reviewed journals and popular outlets. He is also the founder and president of Red Arrow Advisors, a strategic advisory firm that supports clients in the defense and homeland security domains.

Stephen has a record of public service that includes the National Security Council, Department of Defense, Department of State, the House Foreign Affairs Committee majority staff, and as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his service on the NSC staff.

Stephen received a BS from Cornell University, MSc from the London School of Economics, and PhD in War Studies from King’s College London.
