Carol Rosenberg

Carol Rosenberg has been reporting about the Pentagon’s offshore prison at Guantanamo Bay since before the first wartime detainees were brought there from Afghanistan in January 2002, first for the Miami Herald and since 2019 for the New York Times bureau in Washington D.C.

Rosenberg made her first trip to Guantanamo in 1999 to report on the Clinton administration initiative that cleared the base’s minefield. She estimates that she has spent thousands of days at the base, including hundreds of nights in a crude tent compound where the military sometimes lodges journalists.

Rosenberg obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and spent a year as a journalism fellow at Stanford University. From 1987-1994, she was based in the Middle East, primarily for The Miami Herald, reporting on war, peace talks, politics and popular culture. She is a recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for an honoree’s focus on human rights and social justice. The American Bar Association awarded her a Silver Gavel for her coverage of a particularly turbulent year in Guantanamo’s USS Cole bombing case.
