Oliver Jones is a leading junior barrister at the English Bar, with extensive experience of international law and State immunity issues in various contexts. He appeared for the Republic of Iraq in SerVaas v Republic of Iraq & Ors [2012] UKSC 40 in relation to the immunity of Iraqi assets from execution after the fall of Saddam Hussein, against the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Mid-East Sales v Pakistan [2014] EWHC 1457 (Comm) in relation to Pakistan’s responsibility for its nuclear weapons development programme, for the International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund in a series of cases concerning its immunity from jurisdiction and enforcement, and has acted for victims of US drone strikes in a challenge to the legality of reported GCHQ involvement in those attacks: R (Noor Khan) v Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs [2014] EWCA Civ 24. He is also presently acting in a claim against the State of Ukraine for the payment of US$3 billion in Eurobonds that Ukraine claims it is not obliged to repay as a result of the conduct of the Russian Federation in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine.
