Dr. Joshua Schwartz (LinkedIn – Bluesky – X) is an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy & Technology. A core element of his research agenda focuses on the intersection of gender and international security, such as how female commanders-in-chief are evaluated by the public and how greater female political leadership affects the likelihood of international conflict. His work on these topics has been published in top academic journals such as International Organization, International Studies Quarterly, and International Affairs, as well as in general interest outlets such as The Washington Post and Lawfare. 

Professor Schwartz received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 2022. He is also a former Grand Strategy, Security, and Statecraft Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Hans J. Morgenthau Fellow at the University of Notre Dame; Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Emerging Scholar; and intern with the U.S. Senate and U.S. Department of State.
