Matthew Schaaf ( @schfm) is a human rights expert and Advocacy Director at Freedom Now. Prior to joining Freedom Now, he worked at Freedom House, where he opened and served as director of the organization’s Ukraine office (2016-2021) and managed human rights and democracy programs in Central Asia, Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey (2011-2015). Before Freedom House, he worked at Human Rights Watch in Russia (2008-2009) and the Friends Committee on National Legislation in Washington, DC (2005-2006). Schaaf, who is fluent in Russian, holds a B.A. from the University of Rochester and a Master of International Affairs degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
