John Reed

John Reed (@ReedJustSec) was managing editor of Just Security and a research fellow at NYU Law School’s Center for Human Rights and Global Justice 2014-2018. Reed has decade’s experience working in digital media, national security and technology. In 2012, he helped create Foreign Policy magazine’s digital National Security Channel and launched his daily web column, Killer Apps, which focused on the intersection of technology and conflict. Prior to Foreign Policy, he was the editor of Military.com’s publication, Defense Tech. Between 2007 and 2010, he covered military aviation, cybersecurity, and the defense industry around the world for Defense News and Inside Defense. His work has appeared in, or been cited by, Foreign Policy, The New York Times, Wired, The Washington Post, and a number of other publications. He has also appeared as an expert guest to discuss national security matters on CNBC, BBC News, Al Jazeera, CBC News,WNYC, C SPAN, Fox News, and other outlets. Before moving to Washington in 2007, Reed helped launch the North American operations of a Scandinavian tech startup, The Meltwater Group, in Silicon Valley. Before that, he was a small town reporter and his first story as a professional journalist involved chasing escaped emus around Tracy, California. He is a proud New England native.
