Trevor Potter

Trevor Potter (X – Bluesky – LinkedIn) is the founder and president of Campaign Legal Center (CLC), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to solving the wide range of challenges facing American democracy.

A former Republican Commissioner and Chairman of the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Trevor was general counsel to John McCain’s 2000 and 2008 presidential campaigns and an adviser to the drafters of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. To many, he is perhaps best known for his recurring appearances on The Colbert Report as the lawyer for Stephen Colbert’s super PAC, Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow, during the 2012 election.

The American Bar Association Journal has described Trevor as “hands-down one of the top lawyers in the country on the delicate intersection of politics, law and money.” He has testified before Congress on federal election proposals, campaign finance regulation, and AI in our elections. He has served as Chair of several American Bar Association election law and lobbying regulation committees and task forces and is a member of the cross-partisan National Task Force on Election Crises. Trevor has taught election law at the University of Virginia School of Law and Oxford University.

In recent years, Trevor has led CLC as it has grown to meet significant challenges to American democracy. Under Trevor’s leadership, CLC has emerged as a strong and effective advocate for transparency in election spending, fair voting maps, ethics in government, Americans’ freedom to vote and preserving the integrity of our electoral process. CLC today is focused on defending the rule of law, constitutional rights, ensuring free and fair elections and improving the functioning of our democracy.
