Matthew Neuhaus has been Honorary Professor (International Law) at the Australian National University College of Law since 2023.

He was Australian Ambassador to the Netherlands (2018 to 2022) where he represented Australia at the OPCW, the ICJ, ICC, PCA and other international legal bodies.  Mr Neuhaus has previously served as Australian Ambassador to Zimbabwe (2011-15) and High Commissioner to Nigeria (1997-2000).  Mr Neuhaus was Director of the Political Affairs Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London 2002-2008.

He has held a range of senior positions in the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra.  His previous postings with DFAT include Kenya (1983-1985), Papua New Guinea (1988- 1989), Australian Mission to the UN New York (1991-94), where he was Legal Adviser to the Australian Delegation.

He is a graduate of Sydney University (BA Hons LLB 1982) and Cambridge (MPhil 1986) and undertook a Leaders in Development Program at Harvard (2006).
