Katerina Hadzi-Miceva Evans

Katerina Hadzi-Miceva Evans (@KHME) (she/her/hers) is a human rights legal expert; for over 20 years she works with organisations, movements and governments to protect civil society freedoms.  As the Executive Director of the European Center for Not-for Profit Law (ECNL) she leads work to document the impact of counter-terrorism and counter-terrorism financing on human rights and civic space.  She led ECNL’s research and advocacy work that supported the revision of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Recommendation 8.  She now works with governments and civil society to implement risk based assessments in line with Recommendation 8 and to empower civil society to engage in global counter-terrorism efforts.

Through her work with ECNL and membership in OSCE/OIDHR Panel on Freedom of Assembly and of Association she provided expertise in the development of the General Comment no. 37 by the UN Human Rights Committee and the ODIHR Guidelines on Freedom of Assembly.   She has spoken at different forums to raise awareness on various civic space issues e.g., at TEDx Liberdade, EU and UN hearings, launch of Community of Democracies’ Democracy and Security Dialogue Initiative with Ms Madeleine Albright. Katerina engages with the European Union bodies and the UN Human Rights Council states and has supported the drafting of resolutions and policy documents that safeguard civic freedoms and the right to participation. She is also member of the Council of Europe’s Expert Council on NGO Law that supports creation and implementation of standards regarding freedom of association.
