Hannah Garry
Hannah R. Garry (LinkedIn) is Clinical Professor of Law, founding Executive Director of the Donna and Spencer Gilbert Global Justice & Human Rights Center and founding Director of the International Human Rights Clinic at USC Gould School of Law. She is an internationally-recognized teacher, scholar and advocate with over 25 years’ experience, spanning more than 25 countries, in human rights, international criminal law, international refugee law, and transitional justice. Since 2007, she has held academic appointments at USC Gould School of Law, UCLA Law and University of Colorado Law. She has also been a researcher/teacher at Oxford University’s Refugee Studies Centre; Makerere University’s Institute for Social Research; Peking University Law School’s Human Rights Center; the International Institute of Humanitarian Law in San Remo; the University of Oslo’s PluriCourt’s Centre; the International Criminal Court; and the European Court of Human Rights.
In 2022, Professor Garry was named USC Law’s first US Fulbright Scholar. Her scholarship has been published by Oxford University Press; Kluwer Publishers; T.M.C. Asser Press; Edward Elgar Publishing; the Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights, the European Public Law Journal, the International Journal of Refugee Law, the Journal of International Criminal Justice and Berkeley Journal of International Law, among others. She has received funding for her research from the European Union and the Ford, Nuffield and Rotary foundations. She is regularly sought by media outlets such as the New York Times, Newsweek, Washington Post, BBC, Reuters, the Los Angeles Times and The Hill.
Professor Garry has been a recipient of the USC Mellon Award for Faculty Mentoring Graduate Students in recognition of her excellence in teaching over 20 years. In USC Gould’s International Human Rights Clinic, she has trained over 100 of the next generation of human rights lawyers on cases and projects addressing global justice for atrocities, refugee rights, fair trial rights and gender justice.
Professor Garry is a widely-sought expert, having served as amicus curiae before the US Supreme Court, U.S. federal courts, and the International Criminal Court; and given testimony before the UN Human Rights Committee, UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, German Permanent Mission to the UN, UK House of Lords, the Canadian House of Commons and California State Assembly. Garry has practiced in multiple jurisdictions including the ICC, the Cambodia Tribunal, the Lebanon Tribunal, UN mechanisms, the ECHR, the IACHR, and the Eritrea-Ethiopia Claims Commission.
As a longstanding member of the American Society of International Law, Professor Garry is an elected member of its Executive Council and Committee. She is also co-chair of its Women in International Law Group. She serves on the Clooney Foundation for Justice Expert Panel, Human Rights Watch LA Committee, and the USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research Faculty Advisory Board.
Before academia, Garry was Deputy Chef de Cabinet, acting Chef de Cabinet and legal officer for President Judge Fausto Pocar in the President’s Office & Appeals Chamber of ICTY/R in The Hague & Arusha, Tanzania. Garry clerked for Judge Rosemary Barkett on the U.S. Court of Appeals, 11th Circuit, and was as an associate at Freshfields, Bruckhaus, Deringer LLP, in the international arbitration, dispute resolution and public international law groups.
