
Winston Berkman-Breen
Winston Berkman-Breen is the Legal Director at Protect Borrowers (formerly known as the Student Borrower Protection Center), a nonprofit fighting to build an economy where debt doesn’t limit opportunity. Winston leads the organization’s legal work, including litigation and state legislative and regulatory advocacy. Prior to joining Protect Borrowers, Winston was the Director of Consumer Advocacy and the Student Loan Ombudsperson at the New York Department of Financial Services, the state’s financial regulator, where he focused on topics including student loans and debt collection, and worked in legal services in New York and Massachusetts, with a focus on affirmative and defensive litigation related to student loans, debt collection, and foreclosure. Winston also teaches a seminar on state consumer protection law and financial regulation at New York University School of Law. Winston is a graduate of Tufts University, NYU School of Law, and NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
