Just Security unveils a fresh new look: enhancing access to critical analysis
I am pleased to announce the launch of Just Security’s redesigned website, a strategic enhancement aimed at optimizing user experience and ensuring seamless access to our analytic and informational resources. This update reflects our unwavering commitment to our mission:
“Just Security is an editorially independent, non-partisan, daily digital law and policy journal that elevates the discourse on national security, democracy and the rule of law, and rights. We publish rigorous, expert analysis and informational resources on the issues that matter most. Our goals are to inform and empower decision-makers with high-quality analysis, foster informed dialogue on challenging issues, and remain accessible to our global audience. Just Security is an essential resource for those shaping a just and secure world.”
I believe these improvements will significantly enhance your experience on Just Security, enabling you to more easily access the critical analysis and resources you depend on. We encourage you to explore the new site and welcome your feedback.
Central to this redesign is a “content-first” philosophy. We prioritized the discoverability and readability of our articles, resources, and multimedia offerings, recognizing the importance of efficient access to timely and insightful information for our discerning audience.
The new design incorporates several key improvements:
Revamped search engine
Our redesigned search function delivers comprehensive and intelligently prioritized results, categorizing matches by article content, authors, pages, and multimedia. The new search results page features an intuitive layout, with refined filters on the right-hand side-enabling you to easily narrow results by category, tag, author, and more for a faster, more relevant discovery experience.
Streamlined aesthetic
A minimalist design facilitates a positive reader experience and lets you focus on our content.
Simplified navigation
New navigation menus on both desktop and mobile create a multi-level menu designed to streamline the time it takes to get to relevant content and ensure a high-quality user experience on screens of all shapes and sizes.
Improved typography
A transition to a serif font for headers and titles, paired with a legible sans-serif font for body text, enhances readability.
Key topics and tags
Our key topics and the tags that content is filed under have been reworked to funnel every article to the correct navigational pages.
Accessibility
Across the board, we implemented changes with the principle of maintaining or improving accessibility.
Homepage: Guiding Users to Essential Content
The redesigned homepage guides you to the most relevant and timely content. Featured content is prominently displayed, followed by a comprehensive listing of recent articles, resources, podcast episodes, and our daily news roundup. The “Explore Key Topics” section facilitates access to our extensive coverage across a range of critical issues.
Key Topic Pages: Facilitating Content Discovery
Our key topic pages have been thoroughly redesigned to enhance content discovery. Quick links provide direct access to subcategories, where applicable. A new “highlights” section showcases a selection of pinned articles, recently featured content, and recent analysis on that topic.
On all key topic, category, and tag pages, filter and sort option allow for refined content searches across subtopics; related tags articles are filed under, author names, and date ranges. Tag pages can be accessed from an article in the left-hand column in the “filed under” section.
Article Pages: Optimizing Readability and Engagement
Our redesigned article pages prioritize readability and engagement. The left-hand column now houses essential article information, including the byline, publication date, editor’s note (when applicable), an audio playback feature (when available), and a comprehensive list of tags the article is filed under. Author information and a “letters to the editor” button are also conveniently located in this section.
Recommended content for further reading now draws on all the tags an article is filed under to pull relevant content for the “read next” section, showcasing the most recent “featured articles” below–all without tracking individual users, ensuring that our recommendations respect your privacy while still delivering content you’ll find interesting.
Podcast Page: Seamless Access to Audio Content
Our new podcast page provides seamless access to our audio content, allowing users to listen to episodes directly on the page and access individual episode pages via the grid below.
Just Security‘s website redesign represents a significant investment in its mission and its audience. By prioritizing user experience, embracing minimalist design principles, and enhancing content discoverability, Just Security is poised to continue serving as a premier resource on national security, democracy, and the rule of law for decision-makers and our global audience. As a non-profit publication, Just Security relies on the support of our readers to continue providing free, high-quality content.
