Sherif Osman (@SherifFree) is a human rights activist with a focus on Egypt and transnational repression. Sherif deserted from the Egyptian military in 2005 after becoming a whistleblower on the military regime. He used social media to reach out to the Egyptian people during the Arab Spring. Sherif called for protests ahead of the United Nations climate conference, COP27, which was held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. A few weeks later, in November 2022, Sherif was detained in Dubai for 46 days and was released after an extensive advocacy campaign by his family and friends.

Sherif holds a bachelor’s degree in military science from the Egyptian military academy, and a degree in Business Management and Accounting from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
