Suzanne Nossel

Suzanne Nossel (X – LinkedIn) works at the intersection of human rights, democracy and technology as Principal of consulting practice Smart Power Strategies and Lester Crown Senior Fellow on U.S. Foreign Policy and International Order at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. She is a Senior Adviser to Democracy House, Leadership Now Project and the Starling Institute. She is the former Chief Executive Officer at PEN America and author of Dare to Speak: Defending Free Speech for All and co-author of Is Free Speech Under Threat. She has served as the Chief Operating Officer of Human Rights Watch and as Executive Director of Amnesty International USA. She has served at the U.S. State Department as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations and Deputy to the US Ambassador for UN Management and Reform.

She is a featured columnist for Foreign Policy magazine and has published op-eds in The New York Times, Washington Post, and LA Times, as well as scholarly articles in Foreign Affairs, Dissent, and Democracy, among others.

Since 2021 Nossel has been a member of the Oversight Board, an independent body established by Meta as a check on its content moderation on the company’s social media platforms. She is a former senior fellow at the Century Foundation, the Center for American Progress, and the Council on Foreign Relations. Nossel is a magna cum laude graduate of both Harvard College and Harvard Law School.
