Brett Holmgren held several positions on the National Security Council (NSC) staff from 2011-2017, most recently as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Intelligence Programs. He has also served as Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense, and began his career as a CIA counterterrorism analyst.
Brett holds a M.A. in global security studies, summa cum laude, and a B.A. in political science and journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a fellow at the Truman National Security Project, a former term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and the recipient of multiple honors and awards, including the Director of National Intelligence Superior Service Award, the CIA Director’s Award, the CIA Hostile Action Service Medal, and the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award.
