Thomas Earnest

Thomas Earnest (@thomasdearnest) was the Managing Editor of Just Security 2013-2014.  Thomas received his B.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a J.D. from New York University School of Law, where he was an Articles Editor of the Journal for International Law and Politics and a scholar at the Institute for International Law and Justice.  His interests and experience include, among other things, national security matters related to electronic surveillance, privacy, accountability and oversight.  In law school, Thomas worked as a national security and privacy law clerk at the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office.  Immediately before coming to Just Security, Thomas was an associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, LLP in New York City.  He is a former member of the Board of Directors for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, a recipient of the U.S. State Department’s Critical Language Scholarship to Cairo, Egypt, and a former Fulbright Research Scholar and affiliated scholar of the Centre d’Etudes Maghrébines à Tunis in Tunisia. Prior to law school, he also was active in state and federal politics, working as a Congressional staff member on Capitol Hill, as Assistant Communications Director for the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the State of Georgia, and as an aide for several political campaigns. Thomas has completed advance study of written Modern Standard Arabic and has working knowledge of spoken Tunisian and Egyptian colloquial Arabic and French.  Thomas is a member of the Bar of New York.
