Tyler Jess Thompson

Tyler Jess Thompson (LinkedIn) is Co-Founder and Chief Negotiation Officer at Expeditionary, pioneering the integration of artificial intelligence and other technologies with proven negotiation strategies to enhance outcomes in high-stakes environments. He is also a Research Fellow with the UC Berkeley Human Rights Center and brings nearly two decades of experience driving complex agreements across both the private sector and some of the world’s most volatile geopolitical environments. As a founding member of the U.S. State Department’s Negotiations Support Unit, Tyler advised Secretaries of State, ambassadors, special envoys, and foreign heads of state on peace processes, ceasefires, and crisis diplomacy. His work spans more than 20 countries, where he designed and executed negotiation strategies that balanced political, human rights, security, and economic imperatives under extreme risk.

Tyler also served as the Atrocities Prevention Advisor at USAID, where he led interagency engagement at the National Security Council and spearheaded efforts to anticipate and mitigate geopolitical risks that could escalate into mass violence or regional instability. At the U.S. Institute of Peace, he was the Senior Expert on Negotiations and Peace Process Support, providing strategic guidance on conflict resolution, transitional justice, and post-conflict governance. Earlier in his career, Tyler spent six years with the Public International Law & Policy Group, where he served as Legal Counsel, directed the Ceasefires Practice Area, led the firm’s offices in Libya and Kosovo, and authored the Ceasefires Drafter’s Handbook.

In the private sector, Tyler has shaped market-access deals, regulatory negotiations, and risk-mitigation plans for C-suite leaders, incorporating AI-driven insights to enhance strategic formulation. He holds a J.D. and M.A. in International Affairs from American University and a B.A. from Boston College.
