Jan-Albert Hootsen (@jahootsen) is the Mexico Representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists. He joined CPJ in 2016. He has worked as a freelance journalist in Mexico City since 2009 for publications in the Netherlands, Belgium, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, writing on subjects such as press freedom, politics, organized crime, human rights, and environmental issues. He also regularly contributes to Dutch public radio and Dutch television broadcaster RTL Nieuws. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Tilburg and a bachelor’s degree in language and culture studies from Utrecht University. He speaks Dutch, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.
